Why Parrotfish Matter
It's no secret our coral reefs are in peril; over 50 percent of the world's coral reefs have died in the last 30 years, and up to 90 percent may die within the next century. However, when we provide coral reef education and outreach, parrotfish are often overlooked and omitted from educational materials.
Parrotfishes perform important functional roles in the dynamics of coral reef ecosystems.
The Problem
Parrotfish are vulnerable to the same threats facing coral reefs worldwide: global climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, and marine debris. Since some species of parrotfish are considered delicacies, their populations are also at risk of being overfished.
